Michael Shannon, Peter, believes that someone is after him, yet otherwise he seems perfect. Agnes is finally feeling like she fits into the world. When Peter starts showing progressive sign of paranoid schizophrenia, Agnes believes his stories because that’s what she needs to do to not lose yet another person in her life. There is also a very real threat in her ex, Goss, and Peter can save her from that threat.
They then spiral down into madness, and it plays so well. I believed the crazy in this movie, and that is pretty rare. On top of that, the psychology is sound. This is a rare phenomenon, but it does happen. It is crazy to think that you could “catch” a mental disorder, but it just goes to show how connected two human beings can actually become. It’s poetic in its tragedy. Great Film.
