The plot centers around a sixteen-year-old girl named Jesse, Elle Fanning, just breaking into the modeling world. Her naïve/blank look stuns others in the business, and she rises very quickly. I believe the neon demon refers to the change that she goes through, becoming narcissistic and cold, but I am unsure if she ever actually goes through a change, or if she just hid who she was. This state of mind scares and threatens others who then get revenge. The movie contains rape, murder, necrophilia, and cannibalism.
Instead of looking for plot; the point of it all, I was more capable of seeing it for what it was – and it is magnificent. Fanning’s facial expression is so dead, like there is nothing inside her but air, yet she has an innocent beauty that is wonderfully captured in certain moments. Her voice is always soft and slow and she uses few words, but that only forges her persona further. It is very hard to figure out what is going on in her head, which lets you interpret each moment how you will.
